A is for Atom: Unique and Compelling

Entrenched with a plethora of musical knowledge and a passion for songwriting and originality, Mike Cykoski, the front man of A is for Atom has found a way to display rich, compelling sounds with his love and passion for creating irreplaceable tunes.  At the age of 13, Mike found himself enamored with the art of music and by the time he was in high school he had made the decision to pursue it full time.  Mike moved from one state to the next, but by the time he got to Colorado, he was able to dive into their incredible music scene and said, “I joined a few bands that were starting to tour professionally—I was hooked then!”

Now, Mike has founded the Brooklyn based band A is for Atom who mix Mike’s passion for writing music that is unique not only in sound but in theme as well.  The sound of their music pulls at your heartstrings and makes you feel the essence of whatever the song topic may be.  Mike takes his role as a composer seriously, saying “I think that the most important thing when writing is to just be honest about my feelings, it’s a fight against self-censorship so it’s a process for sure!”  He aims to be able to relate to everyone through the work he puts out.

From their most recent EP, Mike says his favorite song is “White Dress” a song about a rough breakup—something that can resonate with anyone who has ever had to say goodbye to someone they once loved.  “I like playing it live a lot—musicians have a good time playing it (especially if they’ve been through a tough breakup),” Mike shares.  He even said that it resonated so deeply with one drummer that they had to calm him down, “he was very emotional about it.”

In the near future, we can expect two new singles from A is for Atom, which will be a part of their next album that is in the works.  Mike also shares that he hopes to bring in a more acoustic element to his shows, “focusing on the songs and the vocals, going to try that out at my next show.”

If you want to see A is for Atom in action, you can catch them at Bowery Electric on Wednesday, October 8 at 8:00 PM with the full band. You can also check the website www.aisforatom.com for updates as well as sign up for their mailing list!

Madysyn Rose: Budding Talent

At 12 years old, Madysyn Rose is taking the Internet by storm with her impressive vocals and charming smile.  While her mom (who is also her manager), says that Madysyn’s popularity seems to have sprung up overnight, Madysyn and her family are not strangers to the spotlight as her father, JackVale, is widely known on YouTube for his prank videos.

Although it is fairly recent that Madysyn has taken to social media to share her talents with the world, the budding star says that singing is something that she has always loved to do—she says she sings so much around the house that he brothers often beg her to be quiet.  “My parents told me I had a good singing voice, so that encouraged me to keep doing it,” says Madysyn, and despite being shy at first, she was able to break out of her shell by singing in front of different groups of people.

Music has now become Madysyn’s favorite pastime and she admits that the best thing about being an artist is the joy that she gets when people recognize her for what she does.  “I recently walked into a hotel lobby and a bunch of girls my age were there and were so excited to see me. It was the best feeling,” she said excitedly.

Madysyn’s musical inspirations come from all areas, but the most prevalent are Adriana Grande, Jessie J, and Torri Kelly because for their ability to both sing and perform beautifully.  Madysyn says that if she could spend the day with one of these artists it would undoubtedly be Adriana Grande, “We would go to Knotts Berry Farm because I love roller coasters, [and] we would talk about our hair.”

In the coming months, Madysyn will be working on her debut EP and will also be doing a reality TV show with her family that is set to air soon.  While she is still a baby in the eyes of the world, Madysyn has her eyes set on the prize and is stopping at nothing to get there!

Kevin Tapia: Music Running Through His Blood

Twenty-year-old Kevin Tapia has lived a life surrounded by music and instrumentation from the moment he was born.  Kevin’s family, originally from Mexico, have been a driving force behind his musical passion and creativity as he comes from a family of musicians. From the age of eight, Kevin knew that he had a knack for music and by the age of 12 he was learning to play the guitar, with a little help from his uncle and the inspiration of Carlos Santana.  However, it was not until high school that Kevin decided that this might be a possible career path.

Musically, Kevin listens to an array of sounds, but his heart lies in two places in the realm of genres: Latin music and R&B.  Nonetheless, coming from a Hispanic household, Kevin has been most influenced by Latino artists such as Romeo Santos, Sin Bandera, Camila, and Mana.  No artist has influenced him quite the same way as the Guatemalan singer songwriter, Ricardo Arjona,  His style of writing is so unique and the words he writes are so strong he’s just the man!” says Kevin.

After finding himself embodied with this overwhelming love of music, Kevin began to embrace the possibility of one day becoming a household name.  His ambitions are simple but genuine: to inspire and enlighten through the music he makes.  I want to inspire people and make them strive for their goals even if it’s not being a musician, it could be anything!” he says.  Kevin’s well rounded ear and love for the guitar is what keeps him sane in moments of discontent, “Just when I feel like my world is coming down, I just crank the volume of my electric guitar and just start playing.”

The future is bright for Kevin, he hopes to continue playing his music and showing the world his talent while bringing a smile to the faces of those who hear him.  Be sure to follow Kevin on social media and keep up with all the new music he’ll be sending your way!

Q & A With Sabrina Signs

Sabrina Signs is a full of life EDM recording artist who has done a little bit of everything in the world of music.   In recent years, Sabrina has released songs from all different genres and found ways to incorporate personal experiences into her music.  She has become an advocate for original and compelling music, discussing topics like homelessness and domestic violence.  Sabrina has been able to use music as an outlet to connect with a public in a way that not many artists are able to do.

Check out this Q&A that we had with Sabrina Signs:

How did you first decide that you wanted to do a career in music?
Sabrina:  "I’m not really sure that it was a decision…I choose to believe that music chose me. Everything in my life is music related. I couldn’t go a second without something involving music in my life. Music is my everything."

Who or what are your biggest inspirations to continue pushing forward with your music?
Sabrina:  "I really have so many inspirations. There are so many talented artists out there. I’m really inspired by Above & Beyond. They are truly a brilliant set of musicians."

What are you working on now and what can we expect in the near future?
Sabrina:  "Right now I’m working on new music and a new direction. You should expect to hear my life, and my heart and soul poured into every second of each song. I hope to improve upon the skills I have and to start learning new skills to better myself as a musician and a person."

What do you consider to be the best part about being an artist and why?
Sabrina: "The best part about being an artist is being different. There are less fears of being afraid to show who you are. You can be unique, and in some cases the more unique of an artist you are the better."

What made you decide to do EDM and did you do any other genre before that?
Sabrina:  "Yes. Well, I had an album out before called “Experiment.” In that album I tried out a couple different genres. The place I feel most at home with is EDM, Rock and R&B. I hope to start showing my influences of those genres on some of my new music. I’m going to go back to my roots and bring out what I loved most about them."

What do you want people to take away from this interview?
Sabrina:  "I want people to take away a sense of who I am. I hope that anyone who reads this becomes inspired to be who they are, take chances, live life to it’s fullest because we really only have one chance. I hope they take away happiness and go download my music for free as a gift from me to reader!"
